Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Hunting Island Lighthouse is the only lighthouse out of eight on the South Carolina coast, that is open to the public. The lighthouse was built in 1859 and was destroyed by the confederates during the Civil War to prevent the Union from using it. It was rebuilt in 1875 and was built using cast iron plates so it could be dismantled and relocated if needed. In 1889 it was relocated about 1 1/4 miles from the original site due to erosion of the beach. The lighthouse was deactivated in June, 1933 and in 1994a decorative light was installed for visitors to see. The lighthouse is part of the Hunting Island State Park and is open for tours. Stop by the lighthouse October 16 - 18th, 2009 for the Hunting Island Lighthouse 150th Anniversary Celebration.
