Orchid Stem
You can make a beautiful stalk of orchids with petals made completely from thread. These blossoms are all stitched out flat on a 5 x 7" hoop. After the embroidery is finished the petals cut are apart, wired, and put together.
1:
Wind bobbins to match the thread colors you will use (three colors).
2:
Gather floral supplies: florist's tape, 22 gauge cloth covered wire, a hot glue gun, wire cutters, a hot stencil cutter or small embroidery scissors with Fray Check, two 1" foam balls, micro beads, white glue and a bead or pearl on a piece of wire.
3:
Prepare to embroider. Use two hooped layers of mesh stabilizer such as Floriani's No-Show Mesh for each design. To make three orchid flowers, you will need to embroider "3-d Orchid 2-1" (stitches enough pieces for two flowers), and "3-d Orchid 2-2" (stitches enough pieces for one flower), and optionally embroider "Orchid Leaf" (stitches two leaves which you can add to your flower stem).
4:
Bend a stem of wire in half, and run each end into the foam balls.
5:
Cover the balls with white glue and cover them with micro beads.
6:
Wrap the wire stem in florist's tape.
7:
Cut out the embroidered petal pieces. If you use a stencil cutter, do so while the embroidery is still in the hoop. If you use embroidery scissors, I recommend running a bead of fray check around each petal and letting it dry before you begin cutting.
8:
Glue wire down the center back of the petals.
9:
Shape the two small petals around the pearl stem, and loop the clover-shaped petal down over the pearl.
10:
The next two pieces to add are the large two-color petals. Place them with the wire side facing out, on the sides of the flower as constructed so far.
11:
Next, add the top petal. This is a medium-sized, one-colored petal.
12:
The last petals to add have a pointed end. They go on the bottom of the flower underneath the arrow-head shaped piece. Use a dab of glue to place them exactly, and bind stems together with florist's tape.
13:
Repeat steps for the remaining two flowers, so that you have three completed flowers.
14:
Starting with the foam balls, create a long stem of flowers, adding flowers successively beneath the balls. Add embroidered leaves to the stem if you wish.
