Why won't my design file open?

In order to open an embroidery file or view an embroidery file by double-clicking on it, you must have embroidery software installed on your computer. If you are looking for a free viewer, we recommend using Embroidery Tool Shed. If you are looking for software to create lettering, we recommend using Embrilliance Essentials in express mode. It's compatible with windows or mac. Purchasing the program will give you many more options. Its definitely worth the price.

I'm trying to embroider an applique quilt. I have edited the design and saved as a PES file, which the machine takes. When I try to start it, the machine says to finish editing the design. I've watched YouTube tutorials about the quilt but can't seem to find what I'm not doing right when it comes to saving the design to use on the machine. What step am I missing?

Hi Jackie,

What kind of machine do you have, and what software are you using to complete your edits?

Brother says their machines:

This message is displayed when the "Start/Stop" button is pushed while the machine is in embroidery edit mode and a pattern is being edited. If your machine is doing this, it thinks you are using " the My Custom Stitch function". If you are, exit that function before beginning to stitch.
If you aren't, perhaps you have selected a different generation of PES when saving than your machine is expecting.

my machine which is a Hisquana Viking Diamond Deluxe only a few years old, does not want to except my designs . the erroe info says its not the right version, this has only happen when I had to buy a nrw computer. it was fine until then

Hi Shirley,

I think you may need to update your machine; if your computer software version and your machine are out of sync (sounds like they might be since you have a new computer), that might be the reason the designs aren't recognized.
Here's how to do that from the Husqvarna Viking site:

Hi John,

You might contact the Compucon company for help with the program that was lost.
http://www.compucon.gr/en_embroidery_support.html
Another possibility might be to contact Meistergram to see if there is a compatibility tool developed so that your older machine can communicate with modern storage media.

Hello Darlene,

I'm sorry this is happening. When you download an embroidery pattern and the unzip is empty, I suggest re-downloading or contacting the design seller. If it's us (Embroidery.com), we'll be glad to replace it for you.

Download Instructions (entire order):

1) Login at Embroidery.com.
2) Go to "My designs" under your name on our home page.
3) Click on one of the designs you would like to receive, and you will see the option to download one of its formats.
4) To download all of the designs in one zip file click "view or download all items in order"
5) This will give you the order number.zip. Click on that.
6) Next choose the machine embroidery format you would like to have for the order.
7) This will create the zip file for you, and you can then click on the "Download Zip File" icon which appears.
8) After you do that, the image "delivering zip file" will appear. Now you just need to check your downloads folder, and there will be your zip file of embroidery designs.
9) You will then right click on the file to find your "extract" or "unzip" option.
10) This last step will look a little different on your computer, depending on which unzipping software is normally used, but just look for the word "extract", and you will find what you need.

Download Instructions (single files):

1) Login at Embroidery.com.
2) Hover over "Hello [Your Name] (Account)" at the top of the page.
3) Click on "My Designs."
4) Click on the design you want to download.
5) Click on "Details/Download." You will see a list of files in various formats.
6) Right click on the file in your format and choose "Save Link As" or "Save Target As". Select your Flash Drive/USB Stick (or other location you'd like to save to) from the list. Click "Save." (If you're on a Mac, do this instead: click on the file in your format and then choose "save" or "okay" if prompted; otherwise, your file will automatically save to your computer. You'll need to drag it from your computer and drop it onto your stick/thumb drive.)
7) Repeat for any additional designs.

Update: Here's how to change file type associations in Windows 10.

Hi Kim,

It sounds like the JEF format has become associated with some other program besides your embroidery program -- on one computer. Good news is that there is likely nothing wrong with the files themselves. You can probably open them by going into your software and choosing "open" from inside it, even though you can no longer open the files just by double clicking on them.

In order to fix it so that they work the way you are used to, you nee to change the file type association. Here are two links to how to do that:

Here is a tutorial on how to designate which application will open specific file types. How to Assign a File Type to an Application in Mac OS X Lion

Here is a tutorial on how to change file type associations in Windows 7. Change the program that opens a type of file

I hope it helps!

my embroidery software on my computer tells me no info to open when i click on a design

Please Login to comment on this post.

Kirsten S.

Hi Willie, That sounds like a problem. What kind of software are you using? Sometimes "no info" means there was something wrong with the design file and it needs to be re-downloaded, but sometimes it is a file association problem, where the wrong kind of software is associated with the embroidery file type. More information on this is here:

Kirsten S.

Hi Cheryl,

Thanks for coming to us with the problem. There are a couple of things that could be in play here.

1. Format. If the format you are downloading is not the one your machine can read, this may be the issue. If that's it, you can solve it by downloading the correct format.

2. Size. If the design is larger than your machine's sewing area, the design may not transfer for you. If that's it, you might solve it by changing the size of the design with embroidery software such as TrueSizer or Embrilliance Essentials.

If you can tell me which design and which machine you are using, I can be more specific in my answer.
