Embroidery on Soap

Embroidery on Soap

We all know we can't actually sew through soap. Just imagine the mess on your machine! And that's what makes embroidery on soap so eyecatching.

 1:

Hoop a layer of topping weight water soluble stabilizer on top, with one layer of a fine tulle fabric in the middle, and one layer of backing weight water soluble stabilizer on the bottom. Embroider your design directly onto the stabilizers you've hooped.

 2:

Embroider your design directly onto the stabilizers you've hooped. Trim any stray threads on the top side. Flip the embroidery over, and trim the longer tails left on the bottom side. Be careful not to trim off any of the knots on this side.

 3:

When thread trimming is finished, cut the backing, topping, and tulle away from the embroidery design, leaving a small margin.

 4:

Dampen the smooth top of your selected soap. A paper towel was used to apply moisture in this exercise. It may take several water applications to properly wet the soap.

 5:

With your fingers, press the embroidery into the moistened soap. Spray lightly with water if desired, to help the water soluble topping to dissolve.

 6:

Now we have a lovely embellished bath bar. We'll need to let it dry for 48 hours. After drying, the bar is great as a bathroom decor object, but will not withstand use; the embroidery will eventually come off in one piece.

 7:

Optionallly, use Mod Podge if you want to be extra sure that your design will stay on the soap. To do so: 1) Obtain a paint brush and some Mod Podge, 2) Make sure soap has fully dried, 3) Apply Mod Podge to completely cover the design, plus a generous border around all sides of the design, 4), Allow to dry as directed on Mod Podge packaging.

I'm afraid I lucked out on this project; a bar I received as a gift had no engraving on one side, so I used the unengraved side. I don't have a source for embroiderable soap as of now, but I'll get back to you. :)

Please tell me where to find the oval bars of soap without a design stamped/engraved into them. I've looked and looked and cannot find soap "blanks."
