Where do I store my embroidery files?

When you order embroidery designs online or on CD, you have the option of choosing where to save them on your computer. While you can theoretically save them anywhere, here are some helpful guidelines for choosing a saving location.

  1. Can you find this location again?

We suggest saving designs in a sub-folder of the My Documents (or Documents) folder. Mostly, this is for ease. Documents (or My Documents) is an easy folder to access, with shortcuts from multiple locations built into most Windows Systems.

2. How do you want to find this design again?

If you are just starting out, we recommend just putting all of your designs in the same folder and using a design viewing software (such as Thumbnailer) to identify them.

Do you keep your designs organized by theme, order number, or size? Theme is one of the most popular ways to organize designs. If you have a large number of designs, consider creating sub-folders within your Embroidery Designs folder for keeping them. To make a folder use (ctrl+shift+n) We also recommend using a viewing software (such as Thumbnailer) to identify the designs within each folder. Thumbnailer will show you a picture of what each design actually looks like:

3. Do you want to re-name your design?

You can. Just remember not to change the 3 or four characters that come after the period in the filename.

For example: aihob.pes can be renamed bell2.pes, but removing the .pes and naming bell2 is likely to cause problems until you add that extension (.pes) back to the name. Some computers default to not displaying the three digit extension at all, and that’s okay. Just remember that if you re-name it and you can see the extension, leave it as it is.

Those are the basics to saving embroidery designs.

Hi, Diane. We're sorry you're feeling overwhelmed. If the designs are on your computer, you can simply do the following:

Make sure your memory stick is plugged into your computer. Right click on each file you want to send over (one at a time). Left click on "Send To" and then left click on your memory stick in the list that comes up. The file should send over within a few seconds. Repeat for any other designs.

I hope this helps clarify things but if you need clarification please let us know.

Hi, Tina. Thanks for the questions. No, you will not need a Mac program unless you are using a Mac for some part of the process. Yes, embroidery our embroidery designs can be used on a Windows 10 HP computer. Here's some instructions on how to download and transfer your designs:

Downloading from Embroidery.com:

1) Login at Embroidery.com.
2) Hover over "Hello [Your Name] (Account)" at the top of the page.
3) Click on "My Designs."
4) Click on the design you want to download.
5) Click on "Details/Download." You will see a list of files in various formats.
6) Right click on the file in your format and choose "Save Link As" or "Save Target As". Select your Flash Drive/USB Stick (or other location you'd like to save to) from the list. Click "Save." (If you're on a Mac, do this instead: click on the file in your format and then choose "save" or "okay" if prompted; otherwise, your file will automatically save to your computer. You'll need drag it from your computer and drop it onto your stick/thumb drive.)
7) Repeat for any additional designs.

I want to store my embroidery files on the cloud or some where out of my computer in case my computer goes down. I do not want to lose my hundreds of designs. what do you recommend?

Hi Mary,

I personally haven't used any cloud systems for embroidery file storage. But I do regularly use Google's Drive. I suggest that if you have Gmail already. A certain amount of storage is free, and more can be purchased.

Hi, I have been trying for 3 months to get designs from the internet to my Babylock Ellagante 2. I purchased the embroidery machine in 2009. I have sewn but never learned to use the embrodiary part. I decided I would now with my grandaughter. I have a desktop I Mac 6 years old. A MackBook Air 3 months old( I thought I could take it to a class if I wanted to). A Acer pc with windows 10, which I hate. A scan N cut 6 months old. I was told I did not need any software if I did not want to digitize. Wrong. I couldn’t find my designs. I was told I needed to use a pc only. None of the research I looked into had any information on Windows 10. I had a lap top that was a pc. I perfer a mac. I took it to the shop and had it cleaned and windows 7 premium edition installed. Now micro soft said they won’t support windowns 7 or 8. Upon studying everything on my babylock ellagante 2 which I purchased in 2009, I checked the serial number and it was made in 2005. 2005 can only use a few USB and maxium 2GB. I purchased a brother USB for around $30.00 2GB> A babylock 1GB is around $50.00. I need to know every step from downloading a design, creating a file on the windows 7. I also installed Winzip, which I need to learn. Some of the embrodiary sites recommend it and McAfee, which I have on my pc computers, says to be careful of it. I need to know how to get the design out of the folder and into the correct brand USB with the correct amount of GB. Than when I finally get to the sewing machine and insert the USB which meets all of these things, shows up a file with “systems” in the window. The next time only JPEG downloaded and the last time Pes showed with blank whilt sheets for files. If there is a book, DVD or instructions that can answer this I could get on with my grandaughter.

Help. If not, thank you for listening.

Hi Peggy, Welcome! I would love to help you get into the embroidery part of your Babylock. I'm impressed by your learning of how to use Windows software for embroidery so far. I feel for you with attempting to learn everything for Windows. I personally work on Windows 10 (I continue to loathe it from time to time, though I am learning to use it -- and I'm a longtime Windows user!). I also use Windows 7 from time to time. If you really want me to walk you through using embroidery designs on Windows 7, I'll be glad to help.

However, you absolutely can do embroidery without a Windows computer. Since you prefer a Mac, let me introduce you to Embrilliance suite of software. For basic use of downloaded designs and zip files, I suggest Convert it, Mac from Embrilliance. It's $118.00 on special right now here at Embroidery.com, and it has a 90 day money-back guarantee. It is a file conversion and browsing tool for embroidery, made for Mac. Embrilliance has great, responsive customer support for all of their software. Here's a video on how it works, so you can get an idea whether it suits you:

Convert It, Mac is for looking at and coloring, printing and saving your designs to the USB. Right now that sounds like it's what you want to do. If you later find you want to do more, like adding and removing parts of designs, adding text and such, Embrilliance also has other, more powerful software for embroidery, native on Mac, so you won't need to switch to Windows even if you want to digitize. I think you'll be happy with working in Embrilliance on your Mac.

I have a Viking and the designs they have use RA or Sulky thread color call outs; how do I convert these colors to Hemingworth threads?

Hi Sheila, There are two ways I can think of to convert between color brands. One is to get physical thread color charts for each brand and select for each color change the closest color in the new brand.

Another way is to use software. For instance, Embrilliance software has colors for each brand installed. If you open a design that has RA or Sulky thread in the software, you can ask it to switch to your preferred brand, and it will match the preselected colors in the other thread brand. If there are some that don't look quite right to you, you can make the changes manually in the software.
