Kimberbell - Quilting Backgrounds

Jeanette and Kim show you how to machine quilt your backgrounds in your hoop:

  1. Hoop stabilizer. Use lightweight cutaway if you intend to leave the stabilizer in the project.
  2. Stitch out the placement line for the batting right on the stabilizer.
  3. While this is still hooped, place the batting over the top.  Cut the batting a little bigger than the square placement line.  Completely cover the line.
  4. Embroider the tackdown stitch. This marks where you cut away the excess batting .
  5. Trim the batting away (this keeps batting out of the seams!).
  6. Embroider the fabric placement stitch.  Now place your fabric in the hoop. Again, cut a little bigger than the placement line.  This helps you deal with pull factors in embroidery.
  7. Fuse a fusible backing to the background fabric for your embroidery.
  8. Completely cover the placement line with the background fabric.
  9. Embroider the fabric tackdown stitch. Don't cut the fabric away.
  10. Embroider the quilting background of your choice.
  11. Now you are ready to stitch the design block.
  12. Use Orange Pop rulers to cut your finished block out.

Technique #2:

  1. If you have a pieced block, or another block that is already cut to the exact size you need for your project, match that block up to the placement line.
  2. Tape it all the way around the edges.
  3. Then use a quilting background embroidery design to quilt it.

Technique #2 is not recommended as much as the first.  It works best when you don't have additional applique or embroidery to do, and are only completing the quilting background design.  Why?  Pull from additional embroidery will distort your perfectly sized block.

Would you like to see stitched samples of the eight quilting background designs that are first to be released? Here they are:

Hi Judi,

Thanks for reaching out to embroidery.com! We don't sell the extra background quilting. I would recommend reaching out to Kimberbell directly. Here is a link to their website: https://kimberbell.com/

Have a great day!
