Joys of Hand-Dyed Floss & Fabric

Lets talk about the Joys of Hand Dyed Floss & Fabric!

METALLIC FLOSS

I love working with Metallic Thread, but a key to working with metallic is a Thread Conditioner like Thread Magic.

Thread Magic prevents tangling, fraying & strengthens thread. Safe for all threads & fabric. Helps reduces hand fatigue. Simply slid your metallic floss through the conditioner. It will help take all those unruly fibers come together and makes working with metallic much nicer.

Kreinik Metallic is a premier metallic thread for cross stitching because it is so soft and easy to use. Available in Blending Filament, #4, #8, #16, & #32

Treasure Braid is a very shinny metallic that comes in size #4, #8, and #16. All are braided and therefore will not unravel as you stitch.

Glissen Gloss Rainbow Blending is a metallic filament wrapped with and supported by nylon fiber, for unbeatable strength, integrity, and memory. Available in 52 sparkling fibers, adds beautiful accents to needlework projects or home decorator accessories.

Check out his adorablee Tin Man by Brooke's Books from the Once upon a Stitch OZ Collection. I added some silver and gold Kreinik metallic floss bring a bit of sparkle to Tin Man.

SPECIALITY FLOSS

Wisper Yarn is a very fine fuzzy single yarn. It is usually necessary to ply up to a thickness that will cover your canvas. It is OK to double this yarn over in your needle. It may also be brushed to give a fuller effect.

When working with Wisper you will try to have it lay flat in the direction that you are stitching. Work a full X as you go. Once you are done stitching use your Judy Boo Boo Stick to fluff it all up.

Take a look at The Cowardly Lion by Brooke's Books from the Once upon a Stitch OZ Collection. I added some Wisper to his mane and now it is big and bushy.

Arctic Rays is best be described as a wispy fringe. It has pieces of transparent fiber that give a glistening effect. When stitching finish each X as you go, also helpful is to use a larger size needle when working with Artic Rays.

Check out The Scarecrow by Brooke's Books from the Once upon a Stitch OZ Collection. I added Artic Rays for the straw and boy does it add some sass to the Scarecrow.

HAND DYED FLOSS

Now most hand dyed are not colorfast. The will say on the back if they are or not. Or it will even recommend testing, simply place in some water and see if it bleeds. Because of the colorfastness it is not recommended that you wash your project after stitching if you have used hand dyed floss.

You will want to finish your X as you go when stitching with Hand Dyed floss. You wouldn’t want to have the bottoms all a dark blue and all the tops a light blue.

The CARON Collection is a manufacturer of threads for needlepoint, cross stitch, crochet, embroidery, knitting, hardanger, crazy quilting, lace making, crafts, and other forms of needlework. They offer hand-dyed variegated threads in two weights of cotton, in silk, and in a 50% wool, 50% silk blend.

Weeks Dye Works 6 Strand Floss is a stranded cotton fiber that is hand over-dyed. The colors are variegated enough to be noticeable, yet subtle enough to blend naturally. Perfect for cross stitch and needlepoint as well as punch needle and stitching on wool applique and penny rugs. It gives a more nuanced appearance to the fine stitching on appliqué when compared to the heavier fibers, like pearl cotton.

Classic Colorworks floss is a 6-stranded 100% cotton thread as well as hand dyed silk and perle 5 threads.

The Gentle Art is a 6 strand, hand-dyed, overdyed cotton floss with a commitment to the quality. GA threads are exciting and fun to stitch with, and give your needlework a faded, antiqued look. Each batch of thread is hand overdyed to ensure that it is treated with care.

HAND DYED FABRIC

Under the Sea Fabrics is unique and no two pieces will ever be exactly alike. Do not wash this fabric as it is NOT colorfast.

Because you can not wash hand dyed fabric, I recommend using an EZ Stitch Scroll Frame. You no longer have to worry about crumpled or hoop burn fabric. Also with a scroll frame you are no longer directly touching your fabric, it eliminates any hand oils or dirt that may happen when using a hoop.
