Needle Felted Feathered Yarn Scarf

By sandwiching the feathered yarn of this scarf between wool fiber and felt, you can embellish with a combination of embroidery and needle felting.

 1:

For the feather yarn hat and scarf, select thread colors, bobbin thread, and felt pieces to coordinate.

 2:

Use printouts of your designs to lay out your decoration plan.

 3:

Since feather yarn is susceptible to being pulled down into the bobbin area if there is no stabilizer used, hoop the scarf for embroidery with a sheet of water soluble stabilizer underneath. Set the start point on the machine, and remove any marking dots or tape. Secure a piece of felt on the top and bottom of the hoop.

 4:

Embroider the large snowflake designs through all three layers. Cut the felt away around the embroidery.

 5:

Place a water soluble topper over the feather yarn scarf, and embroider small snowflakes directly on the scarf. The topper keeps your stitches from sinking underneath the yarn feathers. After the embroidery is finished, remove the topping and stabilizer.

 6:

Now we're ready to felt. Place the embroidered scarf over a buffer material such as a block of polystyrene foam and holding the barbed needle upright, stab it downward, through the three layers of fabric, and into the foam buffer. The needle barbs pull some of the fibers from the scarf through to the underside. To get the same pulled-through effect on top, just turn the scarf over, and repeat the felting.

 7:

More felting comes next. Prepare the wool fiber for felting by pulling segments free, and twisting them into strands between your fingers.

 8:

Felt the twisted fiber down to the snowflakes in a slightly curvy pattern.

 9:

Turn the scarf over, and felt matching trails into the opposite side of the scarf. Bits of fiber which have been brought through by the felting will guide your needle the second time. Now your scarf has felted snowflakes and meandering trails of wool on both sides.

 10:

Set the felting by spraying it with water, and with an iron set to the "wool" setting, iron across the felted areas on both sides of the scarf.
