Making Clear Vinyl Display Windows

Making Clear Vinyl Display Windows

Shadow boxes, trinket pouches, memorabilia pockets -- clear vinyl display windows are the embroidered version of these techniques, and are a fun ways to display small knick-knacks and collectibles. This project illustrates how you can create memorabilia displays as embroidered items. A sewing machine is used in this project.

 1:

The first part of a clear vinyl display window is the clear vinyl. One economical and readily available source is a clear vinyl shower curtain.

 2:

Determine the size of your display pocket. To calculate the vinyl you will need to begin with, add ¼" to all four sides of the finished size for seams, and double the length. For a pocket that fits the colorful border used in this illustration the dimensions are 3 inches in width, and 4 1/2" in height.

 3:

Using those dimensions, cut the clear vinyl section for your pocket.

 4:

Fold the clear vinyl piece in half.

 5:

Then stitch two sides of the pocket closed, leaving one side open for filling.

 6:

In this example, the display pocket will be permanently attached to a tote bag through machine embroidery. For ease of use, fill the pocket with trinkets before beginning the embroidery. Use trinkets that are flat enough to clear the presser foot on your embroidery machine.

 7:

Shake everything to the bottom of the pocket and stitch the top shut.

 8:

To attach your display pocket to your article: at the embroidery machine, stitch the first color stop of your border. This is really an appliqué mark. It shows you exactly where to place the pocket.

 9:

Some machine-safe adhesive spray will help you to keep the pocket in place during embroidery. Keep your machine clean by spraying away from the machine, on a different work surface.

 10:

Align your pocket with the stitched placement mark and press it down with your hands.

 11:

Next comes the embroidery for the remainder of the border. Because the pocket we’re stitching down is full of things we don’t want to stitch through, we will need to keep a close watch on the machine as it works. This is where you’ll be glad that the trinkets in the pocket are small. If you need to redistribute the pocket contents during stitching, stop the machine, remove the hoop, and shake or nudge items in the desired direction. Then, carefully replace the hoop and continue the embroidery.

 12:

A great framed display pocket is the end result.
