Puff Embroidery with Foam

Puff Embroidery with Foam

Puff embroidery embeds a material within stitches, raising the profile of the embroidery itself. This technique is often used in sportswear and team logos. For machine puff embroidery, you need craft foam and an embroidery design that is specifically designed for puff foam embroidery. Here’s how it’s done.

 1:

When preparing to stitch a puffy foam design, select thread and foam that match each other in color for the puffed area of your design.

 2:

Cut the foam to fit within your embroidery hoop. Prepare your item for embroidery as you normally would.

 3:

Place your swatch of craft foam over the hooped fabric before the puffed embroidery area begins sewing. Secure the foam with tape, if you like.

 4:

When the puffy foam elements of your design have sewn, you can simply tear the remainder of the craft foam away.

 5:

Use a craft strength heat wand to gently melt the bits of foam that may poke through the stitches.

 6:

The finished puffy foam embroidery is machine washable, dryable, and can be ironed at medium temperature. Do not dry clean puff embroidery.
