Stitching Story Sara & Amanda

Sara Stitching Story

When or how long ago did you you start cross stitching? We are not going to say how long ago, but I started stitching when I was 12.  Hahaha, I like that.

Who taught you? My mom taught me. It was to learn for a church related program, that is what I wanted to learn was cross stitching.

Did you pick the pattern? Yeah, I think it said "I am a child of god". Or something like that.

You even stuck with it after being 12 years old. Oh yes! That so cool, does your mom still stitch? No she does not.

Do you have that (your first) anymore? I do not have it anymore-- too may moves.

What did you bring us as your first piece you finished? So, the earliest one that I have is probably this one. Its called "Endangered Species". Oh, that's adorable.

So, tell me why you love cross stitch?  I love to do cross stitch because it is my out from everything.  I run my own business and it's stressful. I can just tune out the world and make something beautiful.

It's totally true, it's unlike anything else, almost, I mean besides painting I guess. Most hobbies, like golf, and you really don't get anything besides a really nice walk when you do golf. With stitching you get beautiful pieces of artwork. That's true.

So show us your favorite. This one is my favorite. I love anything Native American, but my grandfather made the frame. So it's got a lot of sentimental value.

That’s amazing, I can't believe he made that frame. Yeah, he was a woodworker when he was living.

So tell us what it says. You're going to make me read it. "Human kind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect."

I love that-- not only is it sentimental 'cause you stitched it, but, I mean … so that’s why its your favorite. Yes.

What other ones did you bring us? So I brought just some other ones I have finished lately. This one says "Lord help me remember that nothing is going to happen to me today that you and I cannot handle."

And my favorite poem, which is the "Footprints in the Sand."

Oh, the "Footprints in the Sand" poem. I have seen lots of "Footprint in the Sand" patterns, but I’ve never seen that one.

So, how many cross stitches do you have going on at one time?  Four.  Really? That might be the lowest number anybody I have done a stitching story has told me. Well, besides Kieryn-- I think she had four, too. Most people were like 30. Oh, my gosh, I could not do that. I know, we have really bad habits here.

I know you are working on some ones (cross stitches) that are on linen. You just started linen. Yes! You have been stitching for quite awhile and just beginning to start linen (now). How are you loving it? Love it.  I will never go back to Aida.  Never.  It's fabulous-- once you get the hang of it, it's a breeze, a total breeze.

And you are starting a new one, and you're going to use metallics and you are going to do beads. This is a first for you as well. Yes, yes.

Sara is currently working on the Dragonfly Fairy by Joan Elliott.

That is so great, even though you have been stitching for many years and you can still learn something new. True!

Amanda Stitching Story

When did you start stitching? Actually only two year ago. I decided I needed something to do-- some kind of new hobby in my life. And then I saw a coupon for Embroidery Central (Embroidery.com). I thought, that sounds good-- I will go down there and see what's happening. I saw everyone’s work and thought, this is way over my head. I don't know if I can even do this. But I want to try and I have loved it. Oh, I am glad you stuck with it.

So what made you even pick embroidery? It skipped a couple generations, but my great great grandmother had done a ton of it. Really intense, detailed stuff and I had seen their stuff and thought, they are not around to talk to me about it but, someone in the family should maybe be doing it. I thought, I can do this. Yeah you can, you can totally do this.

OK, so show me your first project. These are my very first embroidery patterns. I didn’t know what I was doing.

And my second one I did is a bit better than the first.

What about cross stitch or embroidery do you love? It's a creative outlet for me. It's creative and it relaxes me, you know. Doing a puzzle makes me want to kill somebody. But this relaxes me and I can't watch TV without doing it. It's just nice.

Even though it's a new hobby, even though you're still learning, it is relaxing? Yes, and I have a lot to learn.

You just finished your first cross stitch. Yes, I did. I didn’t think I would ever get through it. I started with the little "a" and for weeks I would come in here and all I had was the "a". You did, you really did, but I think you weren’t here for like two or three weeks and all of the sudden it was done. Yeah, I was at a hotel and thought, this is what I am doing. You did great-- it looks amazing, it really does.

I was worried I wouldn’t ever be able to do it.

So this is your favorite, right here? This is my favorite and it's not cross stitch.

So, why is it your favorite? This really was my first embroidery besides the little tiny ones. The color, the message, what it means, you know. I have some health issues and this is a nice thing to look at and remember. To always have hope. And courage and everything else it says.

How many projects at a time do you have going? So, you are still a newbie. I have … there is one more of these (the small basic embroidery patterns).  Cook or Stitch? Embroidery Pattern by Crabapple Hill

Which I am learning 2 over 2. You are. It's going to be your first linen. First linen and second cross stitch ever. Yeah, we will see how that goes. It's going to go great you will get it. Those are the only 2 things I have going right now.

You will get it, I promise.

I want to Thank Sara and Amanda for sharing their stitching stories with us.

Now I want to hear from you. What is your stitching story? Comment below.
