Embroidery on Rubber Covered Fiberglass Mesh

Embroidery on Rubber Covered Fiberglass Mesh

Embroidery adds beauty and personality to apparel and home decor fabrics, but why stop there? With a collection of specialty products, you're ready to embroider unusual materials as well. In this technique, using water soluble stabilizer and a little spray adhesive, I'll demonstrate putting embroidery on a rubber covered fiberglass screen material. This material is often seen in placemats for the kitchen, and that's what I'll be working with today.

 1:

First, cut out an actual size printed production sheet for the embroidery design. This will be used to determine placement.

 2:

Hoop a water soluble stabilizer such as Floriani's Wet 'n Gone. Using a spray adhesive such as 505, affix the placemat on the hooped stabilizer.

 3:

Place a water soluble topping such as Aquafilm on the top of the placemat, also using spray adhesive.

 4:

Use the cut out to determine placement and begin stitching.

 5:

To finish the placemat, use a sponge such as this Spouncer to dissolve the stabilizer & topping.
