How Does Embrilliance Thumbnailer Work?

Embrilliance Thumbnailer is a passive embroidery program -- after you install it, it just works, you don't need to learn how to use it. What it does for you is show pictures of what all your embroidery design files would look like stitched out -- right in your computer window. The video below shows a demonstration of Thumbnailer in action.

Using Windows XP, installed from .exe download.

Using Windows 10, installed from .zip download.

1. At Embroidery.com, find your name (log in) and choose "my designs"

2. Search your designs area for "thumbnailer" or "embrilliance"

3. Click on the Thumbnailer icon.

4. In the right hand pane, click the "Download/Instructions" link.

5. Choose the .zip or .exe download for Mac or Windows, depending on your operating system.

6. When the download is finished, open it.

7. If you downloaded the .zip, extract it by double clicking on the zip, then clicking "extract" at the top of you file window, and "extract all" on the right.

8. Double click on the extracted installation file.

9. Read and agree to the license agreement, click "ok" repeatedly, then "finish"

10. Select the embroidery files you would like Thumbnailer to display.

Kristen, I too can not see the image of the files I have downloaded. (JEF formats) I have the download zip files checked within Thumbnailer and can't figure out why I'm still not seeing the images I've downloaded from various Embroidery sites. Can you help?

Hi Dee,

From our conversation in another thread, I think the issue is probably that Thumbnailer needs to be run as administrator. I'm not sure yet why.

For anyone else reading, who has Thumbnailer running on an administrator account in Windows, but still can't see files in zips, here's the deal: Thumbnailer can see the designs, but it can't "see through" the zip folders.

Here's a zipped folder with an embroidery design in it. As you can see, Thumbnailer is not displaying the design.

So I will open this folder (still not unzipped, not extracted and see what else is in there:

Hm. There are several format folders in here. So maybe if I click on the format folder that I want, I can see my designs? I'll do that:

Why yes, it works. I'm not sure why it isn't working for the last three designs, though. I'll submit an Embrilliance support ticket about that. If it's a bug, that's how they'll find out about it, so it can be fixed.

So now I'll extract (unzip) the zipped file:

Now, with everything unzipped, everything shows up fine.

do i need to have the Embrilliance software in order for the Thumbnailer to work properly ? or will it work by itself

Hi Heather,

To expand on what the other Heather said, you don't need any software for Thumbnailer to work properly. It is stand-alone and works by itself. With that said, though, there is only one thing that Thumbnailer does: show pictures of your embroidery designs in the file view (i.e. without opening the design in embroidery software).

Most users have a need to do more than that, such as edit and transfer designs to their machine, for those applications, some embroidery software is often required.

No, you do not need to have any other Embrilliance software to use Thumbnailer but you will need some kind of embroidery software. It doesn't matter which software, just as long as you have any embroidery software that reads embroidery files.

if i have embrilliance essentials do i need tthumbnailer ?

Hi Rox,

Great question. The answer depends on whether you want your computer to do what Thumbnailer does. If you have Essentials, you can open your designs one at a time to see what they look like. If you have Thumbnailer, you can view what your designs look like without opening them, so you can see the images of an entire folder full of designs at a time. If you have both programs, then you can do both things. Essentials does not include the capabilities of Thumbnailer.

Here is a video that illustrates the difference between working just with Essentials, and then working with Thumbnailer and Essentials combined:

I understand the time pressure. I'm sorry you're running into problems.

Sandra, could it be that your other designs are zipped? There's an option in Thumbnailer to view inside zip files, which needs to be checked in order to work. Alternately, if you have zipped embroidery files, unzip them after downloading, and then they will be visible with Thumbnailer.

I just bought Thumbnailer and thought I had downloaded it. I see all the designs that I've bought from embroidery.com but downloaded other designs expecting they'd show-up in Thumbnailer but I see no sign that it is on my PC-not in 'My Downloads' or on 'Desktop' So, please tell me what I need to do?

... I really am under enormous time pressure, recovering from a crashed computer & trying to get Christmas gifts done in time. Thanks, Sandra
