Few needlework artists are as widely recognized as Emie Bishop. Since founding Cross-N-Patch in the early 1980s, Emie has designed and published hundreds of exquisite needlework patterns, earning numerous prestigious awards along the way. She is best known for her remarkable works that combine the charm of cross-stitch with the elegant, intricate stitches of Hardanger—a traditional Norwegian needlework renowned for its beauty and dimension.
An essential step in the creation and publication of each new pattern is hand-stitching the model, which serves as the ultimate proof of concept. The model's photograph graces the cover of the pattern and acts as a guide and inspiration for stitchers as they recreate its beauty in their own homes. Emie personally worked on these models, either individually or in collaboration with other talented stitchers. In either case, each piece came to life, one stitch at a time.
There is something truly special about the model—the original piece—and the timeless moment when art first reveals itself to the world, bringing beauty into our lives. Art’s full potential is only realized when it is displayed to inspire, uplift, evoke joy or reflection, and broaden our perspectives.
This is why Emie has decided to part with many of her hand-stitched models. While each holds a special place in her heart, there simply isn’t enough wall space in her home or in her children’s to fully enjoy these works as they deserve.
Over the coming months, Embroidery Central will feature some of these extraordinary pieces, and Emie will be accepting private offers for their purchase. Each piece will be signed by Emie and accompanied by the published pattern that showcases the model on its cover.
