Halloween Appliqué Treat Bags

Halloween Appliqué Treat Bags

Trick or Treat! Treat your visitors in style with custom treat bags. These instructions show you how to disguise humble pillowcases as spooky drawstring bags. No special effects were used -- you can do it, too!

 1:

You will need to gather the following supplies: 1 standard pillowcase (20"x 30"), 1 72" long shoelace or drawstring, 1 cord stopper (optional), 41 inches of 1/2" wide single fold bias tape, thread to match the pillowcase, a seam ripper, an air erase fabric pen, and fabric dye (optional).

 2:

Start with one pillowcase. You can purchase colored pillowcases or you can dye white ones as in this example.

 3:

Turn the pillowcase inside out, and using a fabric pen and ruler, make markings four inches down from the open end, all around the entire circumference pillowcase opening.

 4:

At the side seam of the pillowcase, make a second marking, half an inch below the four inch mark made in the previous step.

 5:

With a seam ripper, remove the stitching between the two markings made in step 3. This creates an opening for inserting a drawstring.

 6:

Reinforce the opening by machine stitching back and forth several times at the top and bottom of the opening.

 7:

On the inside of the pillowcase, place the upper edge of the bias tape along the four inch markings made in step three. Machine stitch around the top and bottom of the bias tape, keeping the stitches as close to the edge as possible.

 8:

Embroider the Halloween design of your choice in the center of your pillowcase. A large design of about nine inches in height will look most at home on the large size of the pillowcase. We used "No Bones About it Appliqué" (CD100406FF), and "Peek-a-Boo!"(CD100406FE) from the Halloween Bag Applique Design Pack.

 9:

Feed a drawstring (even a shoelace will do) through the opening of the casing, and attach a cord stopper or tie in a bow.

 10:

Now you are prepared to go trick or treating or charmingly decorate for the season with custom trick or treat bags.
