Crazy Patch Block Stocking

This is a new twist to an old favorite. With your embroidery machine you can create a vintage look crazy patch block to use in many ways. Make several for a quilt top. Make one and use it as fabric for other projects. There are 4 sizes included in this pack, the 5x7 inch (130x180mm) hoop, the 6x10 inch (160x260mm) hoop, the 7x11 3/4" inch (180x300mm) hoop and also the 7 3/4" x 11 3/4" (200x300mm) hoop. Also included in this pack is a Christmas stocking design to be made in the larger embroidery hoops (7xll inch and 7 3/4" x 11 3/4" hoops). You can personalize your stocking for someone special, such as a baby's 1st Christmas and the best things always come in small packages.

Step 1:

Gather the following supplies for the crazy patch block: Embroidery machine with an embroidery field of 5x7 inch larger, 1 piece cutaway stabilizer to fit hoop, 1 piece batting (optional), 5 coordinated fabrics 5 x 23 strips, Decorative embroidery thread.

Step 2:

Gather the following supplies to complete the stocking: 1 piece lining fabric 8 x 14, 1 piece lining fabric 9 x 22 folded in half to 9x11, 1 piece lining fabric 8 x 6 folded in half to 8x3, Decorative button and ribbon to hang stocking.

Step 3:

Instructions to create crazy patch fabric are the same for all sizes. The different colors for the threads are only there to create stops so that fabric can be added. At the point of doing the decorative stitches, threads can be changed to add extra color and texture. Small designs and even monograms or dates can be added after the main fabric has been completed. Adding little buttons or mementos is also part of the crazy patch design. The design sews out a template first of all the placements of fabric. Use the template below to organize your fabric placements and sewing sequence.

Step 4:

This step illustrates the sequence of the piecing. The center is laid down first. It is the only piece that is not folded over. The following pieces are all sewn with the fabrics right sides along one edge and then folded open and tack down in place before another piece is added. After all fabric has been laid, next are embellishing stitches and finally the decorative stitches over the seam lines. At any point before the stocking is added you can embellish more with a small floral or embroidery.

Step 5:

Load design onto machine. Use your merge function on your machine or computer software to add any additional design elements you may desire.

Step 6:

Hoop stabilizer. Sew out placement lines.

Step 7:

Place fabric square over center placement line. (Be sure that your cover all lines with fabric.) Sew tack down stitch.

Step 8:

Place fabric # 2 right side down over center overlapping previous seam line 1/2". Sew seam line stitch. Trim to approx 1/4". Flip fabric out. Sew tack down stitch.

Step 9:

Place fabric # 3 over appropriate seam line. Sew seam line. Trim. Flip fabric out. Sew tack down stitch.

Step 10:

Proceed with remaining fabric pieces. Place fabric # 4. Sew seam line. Trim. Sew tack down stitch. *Fabric will always be placed over center to be folded out over edge of frame.

Step 11:

Place fabric # 5.

Step 12:

Place fabric # 6.

Step 13:

Place fabric # 7.

Step 14:

Place fabric # 8.

Step 15:

Place fabric # 9.

Step 16:

Sew out decorative designs and stitches. Include any additional designs at this step. If using this as piece of fabric you can remove from hoop and square up or input any of the other In the Hoop projects such as the book cover, check book cover or any of the purse accessories.

Step 17:

(Continuing with stocking design.) Place 1 piece of lining fabric over entire back of hoop. Hold in place with a temp adhesive for machines only.

Step 18:

Sew out placement line for stocking body. Place folded piece of lining along top opening of stocking (folded edge to top of stocking).

Step 19:

Sew out tack down stitch and finishing stitch.

Step 20:

Place smaller folded piece of lining fabric (folded edge to folded edge) overlapping top opening of stocking 1/2". Sew tack down stitches and finishing stitch.

Step 21:

Remove from hoop. Trim to finishing stitch. Turn right side out. Press. Add decorative button or ribbon to hang. Fill. Enjoy!
