Snowflake Bowl

Snowflake Bowl

We tried to put an interesting spin on the free standing lace bowl with the three sided snowflake bowl. The bowl consists of a base and three sweeping sides that are joined together with a tacking stitch to give you great results. We then added a filler piece to the sides that will enable you to construct a base for the bowl to sit on. Our project includes two different sizes so you can create a matching set. For further embellishing fun, you can add glass crystals to the bowl. We include our suggestions for finding the tools you need.

Step 1:

Prepare for stitching lace. First plan the color of your bowl, and select the bobbin and top thread accordingly. You can choose colored pre-wound bobbins or wind your own bobbins so the back of the lace matches the front. When using metallics, use a like colored rayon or poly thread, rather than metallic in the bobbin. For good stability in the bowl we use two layers of a water soluble, fibrous stabilizer such as Floriani's Wet 'n Gone or Hemingworth's Hot Water Wash Away. This type of stabilizer will give you the best results.

Step 2:

Stitch the pieces you need for each bowl you plan to complete. Carefully trim the stabilizer next to the sections to create a neat edge. For best results, wait until your whole project is finished before washing your stabilizer out. To create one large bowl, you should stitch: three pieces from "Side Piece, Larger" (HDTRI1), and one piece from "Bottom, Larger" (HDTRI2). To create a decorative base for the larger bowl, you should stitch: three pieces from "Side Piece, Larger" (HDTRI1), one piece from "Bottom, Larger" (HDTRI2), and three pieces from "Wedge Piece, Larger" (HDTRI3). To create one small bowl, you should stitch: three pieces from "Side Piece, smaller" (HDTRI4), and one piece from "Bottom, smaller" (HDTRI5). To create a decorative base for the smaller bowl, you should stitch: three pieces from "Side Piece, Smaller" (HDTRI4), one piece from "Bottom, Smaller" (HDTRI5), and three pieces from "Wedge Piece,Smaller" (HDTRI6).

Step 3:

Now prepare to join the pieces you have completed. We use a joining stitch to sew the finished lace pieces together. Using a zig-zag stitch can cause tunneling and an uneven seam. The stitch on the left shows the shorter length needed to join the pieces.

Step 4:

The first step in assembling the decorative base is to stitch the three side pieces (HDTRI1 or HDTRI4) to the base piece. Use a standard joining stitch in the same color as the base color. The next steps are going to show you the process of joining the pieces to create a decorative base, and a beautiful bowl.

Step 5:

To stitch the decorative base, attach three side pieces to the bottom piece, and add wedge pieces between the side pieces. Here, you see the wedge piece which has been added to the side pieces for the decorative base. The only difference in stitching the base and stitching the bowl itself is the wedge pieces, which are inserted between the side pieces when you make the base. The wedge pieces help the base to lie flat.

Step 6:

Here, you see the side pieces being attached to the bottom piece for the bowl. When you stitch the bowl pieces together, you will not need to insert wedge pieces between the side pices, as was done for the decorative base.

Step 7:

When you are done sewing the pieces together rinse the design for a few seconds under warm water. This will remove most of the stabilizer.

Step 8:

The next step is to attach the sides of the bowl to each other to form the structure of the bowl. Notice in the picture how the sides overlap.

Step 9:

The sides of the bowl are tacked together using a hand stitch.

Step 10:

Now you have a completed bowl and decorative base.

Step 11:

For a little more sparkle on your snowflake bowl, add crystals. Hotfix crystals are very easy to attach. When you purchase hotfix crystals, you will also want a hotfix attachment tool, which includes a step by step list of instructions. Crystals are available in a variety of colors and sizes to embellish any project. All crystals provided for this project were supplied by Design by Dawn. You can find more information on her products by visiting her website: http://www.designbydawn.com/

Step 12:

For this project, we used small crystals of the 2-4mm sizes. Lay your crystals out, pretty side up, on a heat-resistant surface. With your heated hotfix tool, pick up one crystal at a time.

Step 13:

Press the crystal down where you want it to go, and then lift the tool. The crystal stays in place on your lace.
