Snow Globe Tree Skirt

Snow Globe Tree Skirt

We designed a Christmas tree skirt using designs from the "Snow Globe" design pack. Our example is perfect for a small tree or a table top tree, and the pattern can be enlarged for creating a larger skirt. You will need three or four different fabrics, three trims, and some bonded batting to complete this project.

 1:

To make a pattern for this project, create a full circle that measures 24" in diameter, with a 3.5" hole in the center. Fabric will be cut in steps three and four. We used two pieces of each of three different fabrics for the panels that make up the circle.

 2:

Select three coordinating fabrics and trims for alternating wedges of the tree skirt. We fused a lightweight interfacing to the back of all the fabrics we used. We used a metallic blue rick rack to trim the borders between each wedge. For the center border of the tree skirt, a double edged gimp trim was used. A scalloped edged gimp trimmed the outer circumference of the tree skirt.

 3:

Each wedge section for the tree skirt begins as a square. Embroider the snow globe design on the fabric square before cutting the wedge shape to the pattern size.

 4:

Repeat step 3 for each of the fabric wedges designed in the tree skirt pattern.

 5:

When all the pieces have been cut out, join the sides together, leaving one side at the end open, in order to slip the skirt around the tree base.

 6:

To finish the tree skirt, choose a simple coordinating fabric to back the entire tree skirt. Layer the back fabric, bonded quilt batting, and the embroidered top fabric piece together. Stitch in the ditch (along the seams between wedges) through all three layers, and baste around all the edges.

 7:

To give the finish a polished look, serge all the raw edges and sew rick rack trim along the seams. Fuse the gimp trims on top of the serged edges and stitch them in place.
