Embroidered Snow Globes

Embroidered Snow Globes

This tutorial demonstrates how to use the designs in the "Snow Globes" design pack by Anita Goodesign. The snow globes use two applique steps to create designs that really glisten with dimension.

 1:

Each snow globe design includes two opportunities for applique. The first applique is for the "inside" of the globe, and the second is to simulate the globe's glass. The first step is to stitch the outline stitch for the first applique. This stitch shows you where to place your applique fabric.

 2:

Now place the first applique fabric so that it completely covers your outline stitch. For ease in cutting the fabric away, overlap the stitched outline by at least an inch on all sides.

 3:

Start your machine again. The next step in the sewing order is called the "tack-down" stitch. This stitch will secure your applique fabric.

 4:

Remove the hoop from the machine, but don't un-hoop. Trim around the tack-down stitch as closely as you can. We recommend applique scissors with a curved blade.

 5:

Once the applique is trimmed, return the hoop to the machine.

 6:

Embroider the rest of the snow globe interior design elements.

 7:

Once again, the machine will stitch the applique mark. Stop the machine and place clear vinyl over the design as shown.

 8:

After placing the applique, the next step is the tack-down stitch to hold it in place.

 9:

Remove the hoop from the machine, but don't un-hoop. Trim around the tack-down stitch as closely as you can. We recommend applique scissors with a curved blade.

 10:

Once the clear plastic is trimmed, you are ready to finish the design.

 11:

Return the hoop to the machine and embroider the rest of the design, which will provide a satin stitched edge around the applique, and add a base to your snow globe. The "Snow Globes" design pack includes two "blank" snow globe designs so that you can create your own scene by using some of your other designs as well as using the beautiful snow globe scenes in the pack.

I'd like to make the snow globes as stand alone tree ornaments. So, could I bypass the 1st step, continue the design, add glitter, stitch the plastic on, etc. would I use a tear away stabilizer

Hi, Lysa. Thanks for writing. I haven't used this project as you indicated. If I were to do it, I would not skip step one, as I'd still want the applique part of the design. I'd use some of the steps from the Making Badges project, also in our project gallery, to help give the ornament a sturdy backing:

Hi, Shelly. That's so great to hear! I hope it turns out beautifully.

We don't have a way for you to upload project photos directly at this time, but if you want to email some to me at [email protected], we'd be happy to add them to our project gallery.

Hi Shelley,

I've seen it in craft stores and sewing stores. I'd check your local fabric store first. They usually keep some on a big roll for use in table coverings.

Where can you purchase the clear vinyl?

Shelly, you can use a clear shower curtain liner (heavyweight vinyl) for this project.

Oh! good tip. I've done that, myself. Yes definitely, a shower curtain liner is a great accessible, affordable option.
