Embroidered Holiday Candle

Embroidered Holiday Candle

This project demonstrates applying lace embroidery to a candle for a decorative holiday effect.

Step 1:

Select a lacy design to embroider for this project. Using your printed production sheet, select the smallest hoop that accommodates the design. This will reduce the chance of distortions in the design due to thread and fabric pull.

Step 2:

Firmly hoop one sheet of Floriani Wet 'n Gone stabilizer, for a tight, unstretched and unpuckered embroidery surface.

Step 3:

Embroider the design directly on the Wet'n Gone stabilizer.

Step 4:

After the embroidery is finished, trim the stabilizer around your embroidered design, leaving a small margin.

Step 5:

Using a sponge such as the Spouncer used in this demonstration, dissolve the Wet'n Gone Stabilizer. As it dissolves, the stabilizer deposits adhesive, gluing your embroidery to the candle -- all in one easy step.

Step 6:

If you desire to adhere other designs to the candle, allow this one to dry fully before doing so.

Step 7:

Once the candle has burned down to the level of the embroidery, you can easily pull the design off of the candle and use it as an ornament, or as an embellishment for a scrapbook or greeting card.

is there any special lacy design we should use to complete this project? Wouldn't it be the stand up lace designs so the stitches stay together?

The design I used for this project actually wasn't designed for free-standing lace, so it is important that I used a fibrous water soluble stabilizer. Other removable stabilizers (the see through kind) would completely be removed, and the stitches would fall apart. If you try using non-freestanding lace designs for something like this, one important thing to look for is that all the design elements are connected, unless you want to piece the pieces together on the candle rather than as one freestanding element.

Hi Linda! Kirsten used the Swirl Poinsettia from the Christmas Swirls design pack, but any freestanding lace design will do.

(You are right that you'll want to be sure to purchase freestanding lace and not a design that just says "lace" or "lacy".)

thanks for the confirmation Heather, I would love to try this and I love the idea about when the candle burns down then you have a beautiful lace figure to keep...
