Embird Cross Stitch is an optional plug-in for Embird. It provides a number of tools and stitch styles to create a perfect cross stitch pattern. So i would say it doesn't required a program before to add the cross stitch adder.

I'm so sorry but I don't know, Mary. We don't carry Embird, so I don't know much about it. If someone else has that information, please pipe in. Otherwise, I'd recommend contacting Embird for help:

are there any tutorials and software so I can create my own cross stitch designs on my embroidery machine
Kirsten S.
There is software that lets you make your own cross stitch design for an embroidery machine. One that I know of is called Cross Stitch by Embird: https://www.embird.net/sw/embird/cross.htm
They may have some tutorials for it.

Since I can never hand cross stitch all the patterns that I have, I am now interested in purchasing a embroidery machine. I am looking for a machine that will do very large patters.
What machines should I start looking at?
What do I need in a machine
Kirsten S.
Hi Patricia, I'm not familiar with any embroidery machines that will read and stitch from hand cross stitch patterns. In order to have a machine do your hand cross stitch patterns, you'd need to not only get a machine, but also hire someone to create the type of machine-embroidery readable file that your machine would need for each of your patterns. If you're up for that, the term for a person who does that work is a "digitizer."
In our examples of machines doing cross-stitched designs, the designs have already been created in machine compatible formats.
In order to do the largest patterns, you'll want to look at multi-needle machines.
Patricia E.
What file format does a Brother machine need for a cross stitch design? I have someone that wants a label created. My software is from Viking which uses KRZ but I have no idea if her machine has the capability of cross stitch designs.
Heather B.
Hi, Patricia. Thanks for the question. Most Brother machines can read a .PES format, but you could check with her to assure that is correct. My understanding is that your software can save to .PES format. All embroidery machines can do cross stitch, so long as it is saved into the correct machine embroidery format. Please let us know if you have further questions.

This is an Apple Jam Pattern purchased on Etsy. I used Bernina v8.2 software which includes Corel draw for editing graphics. I imported the PDF pattern, converted it to a jpeg file, cropped it, and then digitized it in the cross stitch program, by hand not automatic, even though the software has that capability.
It is 14 count but a large pattern sometimes the pictures are too small and I change to 10 count or whatever will fit in the hoop This pattern was divided into three sections, so three hoopings it sounds like a lot of work but not compared to doing it by hand since I left it at 14 count I stitched on 14 ct Aida cloth , but I have others that I stitched on muslin pressed and starched with best press
Kirsten S.
Kathy, I'm so impressed with your work. Thank you for posting it here, and for including your process. I'm sure it inspires others!

Nice job, Kathy! Thanks for sharing.

Is there away to import a hand cross stitch pattern into my Digitizing Program and covert to machine embroidery cross stitch design/
Heather B.
Hi Terry. Thanks for the question. That is not possible with any software you already own but there is software available that you can use to do that. Embroidery.com no longer carries it, but PatternMaker for Machine Embroidery is a software we would recommend. Here's a link to the manufacturer's website:

It did not seem to be expressed in the video that she needed a software in doing the clock birds design, but in notes, it is expressed that you do need software, so does anyone know for sure, cis the software a must?
Heather B.
Hi, JoAnn. Thanks for the question. Software is not needed for the bluebird clock design project. Just the bluebird design, plus any supplies such as fabric, the clock, spray adhesive, etc.

I'd recommend focusing on which embroidery machine will work best for you within your budget. Talking to a dealer, friends who have embroidery machines, etc, can help with that decision.

I have a cross stitch pattern that I would love to be able to do on my new embroidery machine. Is there a way to convert a hand cross stitched pattern to a machine pattern???
Donnett H.
Yes there is the Pattern Maker Machine Embroidery Add- On Software.
The Feature Details say “The Machine Embroidery add-on of Pattern Maker allows you to very easily export your cross stitch designs into one of the common embroidery file formats for stitch-out on a machine"
I have not personally used this version of Pattern Maker. I have used other versions of Pattern Maker and find it a very easy to use program.
Here is a link to the program read through the details and see if this is what you are looking for.

Can cross stitch be embroidered on regular cotton fabri or should you use the apportion size Aida fabric. I can't see to hand cross stitch and this is such a wonderful alternative.
Karen
Heather B.
Hi, Karen. Thanks for writing. Yes, machine cross stitch is a wonderful alternative. It can be done on the fabric of your choice (i.e., Aida is nice, but not necessary).
P.S. If you do end up deciding to embroider it on Aida, here's some helpful instructions from our project gallery: https://www.embroidery.com/help.ec?docid=1950&div=Step

This is amazing that we can do cross-stitch designs with your embroidery machine. Now a days, doing embroidery on the dress or any cloth is very easy by this, it also save the time of doing embroidery. I am also using this technique at home and I design many dresses by doing embroidery on it. [LINK REMOVED]
Heather B.
Thanks for your comment, Yesenia. Yes, it is exciting that we are able to dress up projects with machine cross-stitch. That's great that you've embellished dresses with this technique! ~Heather
